One of the frequent questions that comes up across in the SketchNoting (and in general the Art Community) – What is the biggest challenge when it came to creating and sharing SketchNotes? Some common answers that I have heard, “I am not good enough”, “I don’t think I can really do it”, “Will people like to see what I create”, etc. It’s okay to think like that when you begin. I did too. So what helped me overcome this? A concept that I learned in the book Ikigai. The concept of Wabi Sabi. The art of embracing imperfection.
The philosophy helped me embrace the imperfection in my own visuals. My circles were not perfect, my lines were not straight enough, the curves were not angular or sleek like the professionals made. Wabi Sabi asks that you embrace them. The visuals could be simple, asymmetric. It is more important to share the message than to create the perfect visual.
With this mindset, I am happy to say, I could create 100+ SketchNotes and 200+ InfoSketches with quotes. All of these were shared on my social media profiles. Yes they are no where near what some of the professional graphic illustrators can create. But I am happy with my creations, each and every one of them.
